English Holloware

1495-04.jpg (55857 bytes) 1495-04. Antique George III Silver-mounted Wood Cruet of typical form on turned foot, the revolving turntable holding five cut glass bottles with silver caps, the turned column ending in a hinged scroll handle; struck twice on the handle only with the mark of Jane Dorrell & Richard May, working in London 1766-1771. No mono. Frame: 11.0" high, 8.0" wide, 5.0" foot diameter; Bottles: 5.5"-6.5" high, 2.12"-2.38" diameter. The wood frame has been restored, one silver cap is cracked. An unusual and rare survival. $ 750.

Antique George III Silver Tankard of classical form, the tapering cylindrical body decorated with upper and lower bands of horizontal rings, very slightly domed cover with cast thumb piece,  applied molded rim and flat panel double scroll hollow handle; marked [I•R] for John Robins at London in 1798/99. Script mono "WSW" on cover. 6.88" high, 6.5" long, 3.75" lip diameter, 4.25" foot diameter, pints capacity, 28.8 troy oz. $ 2,250.
1493-18. Antique George III Silver Large Cann of classical form, the tapering cylindrical body decorated with upper and lower bands of horizontal rings, applied molded lip rim and flat panel double scroll hollow handle; marked with a worn [I?] possibly for John Robins at London in 1801/02. This has the same script mono "WSW" as the 1798/99 Tankard above. 4.75" high, 3.25" lip diameter, 3.75" foot diameter, 5.25" length across handle, 13.7 troy oz. $ 1,000.
1566-11. Antique George III Silver Tea Pot Stand of oval form with narrow molded rim and applied edge, the shallow sides holding the wooden base with later felt cover; marked by John Emes at London in 1804. 0.88" high, 6.88" long, 5.0" wide. Mono erased. SOLD

Pair Antique George IV Silver Snuffer Trays of shaped hourglass form on four cast floral and scroll feet, the tray surface chased with floral, foliate, and scroll repoussι decoration within a cast and chased rim decorated with floral, scroll, figural eagle, and lion mask motifs, the handle cast and chased as an undulating scaled snake; marked [IW] for John Wakefield at London in 1820/21. 3.0" high, 9.25" long, 3.75" wide, 22.3 troy oz. total. 1562-35. Antique George IV Silver Snuffer Tray of hourglass form on four cast shell & scroll feet, the tray surface chased with floral & scroll repousse decoration inside the cast and chased floral and foliate scroll rim, cast and chased flying double scroll handle with foliate cap; marked by Thomas Burwash at London in 1821/22. 2.75" high, 8.0" long, 3.75" deep, 10.65 troy oz. The original engraving replaced with crowned lion's head crest below a viscount's(?) coronet. $ 1,250.
1573-67. Antique George IV Silver Waiter of circular form on three cast foliate shell feet, applied cast gadroon edge; marked [DH&Co.] for Daniel Holy & Co. at Sheffield in 1822/23. 1.0" high, 6.75" diameter, 9.4 troy oz. Mono erased. $500.
1416-42. Antique George IV Silver Pint Mug of thistle form on pedestal base, chased acorn and leaf band and cast floral decorated scroll handle; marked by William Bateman II at London in 1826/27. Mono erased. 5.5" high, 6.0" long, 4.25" lip diameter, 3.0" foot diameter, 6.0" length across handle, 11.0 troy oz. $ 1,000.

Antique Victorian Silver Dresser Box of cylindrical form with ruffled foot and cover rims, the domed slip-on cover and body chased with grotesque and fantastical mask, floral, and scroll decoration; marked by William Comyns at London in 1896/97 and struck with the French import mark when retailed by Tiffany & Co. at their Paris shop. Mono "LMP". 3.88" high, 3.88" diameter,  6.7 troy oz. $ 700.

Edward VII Silver Pocket Flask of rectangular form with removable cup base, engraved allover with floral and foliate scroll decoration; the body and cup marked by Arthur & John Zimmerman at Birmingham in 1906/07, the outer cap marked by Thomas Jones Watson at London in 1906/07. No mono. 3.88" high, 3.06" wide, 1.38" deep, 9 troy oz. Upper left corner at shoulder has been dented and has small very small gouges there. $ 350.
1560-52. Antique George V Silver Candy Dish of octofoil form on flat base, narrow applied floral lip and two cast ribbon handles, the sides pierced with floral(?) decoration; marked by E.S. Barnsley at Birmingham in 1911/12 and struck with English Design Registry No. 557803. No mono. 1.25" high, 7.12" long across handles, 5.12" diameter, 4.0 troy oz. Small crack in piercing. $ 200.
1553-66. George V Silver Youth Cup in a reproduction of the William III style of tapering cylindrical form with applied foot-, lip, and mid-rib moldings, applied hollow s-scroll handle with beaded rattail decorative motif; struck with the britannia silver standard (.9584) hallmarks and marked by C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd. at London in 1914/15. Script mono "NH". Some dings. 3.75" high, 2.62" lip diameter, 3.12" foot diameter, 4.5" length across handle, 8.1 troy oz. $ 400.

The decorative pattern is similar to 'Feather Edge' but instead of being engraved it is chased on both sides of the handle. $ 400./pair

1577-43. 56 Piece George III Assembled Partial Flatware Set in the hand-engraved double-sided 'Fiddle Thread' pattern consisting of 12 Table Spoons (1805/06(2), 1806/07(7), & 1809/10(3)), 12 Table Forks (1806/07(10) & 1811/12(2)), 12 Dessert Spoons (1806/07(9), 1813/14(1) & 1819/20(2)), 11 Dessert Forks (1800/01(2), 1804(2), 1806/07(5), 1840/41 (1) & 1843/44(1)), 8 Tea Spoons (1806/07), and 1 Butter Knife (1809/10); all marked at London either by Eley & Fearn (47 pieces), Eley, Fearn & Chawner (6 pieces), or single examples by Thomas Dicks (1813/14 single-sided, William Eaton (1840/41), or George W. Adams for Chawner & Co. (1843/44). Antique George III Silver Cheese Scoop with short circular cross- section tapering ivory handle fitted to a tapering circular silver shaft ending in an applied scoop blade; marked by Joseph Willmore at Birmingham in 1810/11. 1558-33. Antique George III Silver Cheese Scoop with short diamond cross- section tapering ivory handle fitted to a tapering circular silver shaft ending in an applied scoop blade; marked by William Ellerby at London in 1812/13. No mono. 8.25" long, 1.1" blade width, 1.0" handle width. $ 150.

1537-15. Antique George IV Silver Small Marrow Scoop in the 'Old English Plain' pattern with a short narrow scoop; marked by William Eley & William Fearn at London in 1822/23. Possibly this was once part of a traveller's dining set; marrow scoops are unusual in this size. 4.65" long, 0.38" blade width, 0.4 troy oz. Mono erased. $ 200.
1479-52. Antique George IV Silver Grape Scissors in the 'Fiddle' pattern ending in finger ring grips, steel pivot screw above the blades; marked by William Eley II at London in 1826/27. No mono. 6.75" long, 2.25" width across handle finger rings, 3.5 troy oz. $ 400.

1463-90. Antique Victorian Silver Salt Spoon with the cast and chased handle decorated on both front and back and ending in a figural head finial, the shaped circular gilt bowl; marked by George R. Elkington for Elkington, Mason & Co. at London in 1856/57. No mono. 3.75" long, 0.88" bowl width, $ 75.
1573-02. Victorian Silver Caddy Spoon with die-struck shell-form gilt bowl decorated with small seashells on a bed of foliage, the cast and constructed chased handle in the form of a snake intertwined with gilt foliage; marked by Hilliard & Thomason at Birmingham in 1857/58. No mono. Similar examples of this desirable form are currently available on two London dealers' websites; the handles are all different due to construction methods. 3.5" long, 1.6" bowl width, 0.48 troy oz. The 1857/58 hallmarks are struck on the snake with the maker's mark hidden beneath a leaf but an 1855/56 example of the same model is illustrated as Plate 57A in John Norie Caddy Spoons An Illustrated Guide (London: John Murray, 1988). $ 550.
1569-36. Victorian 'William Shakespeare' Souvenir Bon Bon Spoon, the handle with facsimile signature and ending in a gilt finial bust and pierced bowl; marked by George Unite at Birmingham in 1891/92 and stamped with Registry No. 152874. No mono. 4.25" long, 1.55" bowl width, 0.3 troy oz. $ 60.

Antique George III Silver Vinaigrette of rectangular form, the hinged cover and base engraved with woven straped basketweave decoration, the gilt interior with hinged engraved woven straped basketweave decorated pierced grille; marked [WE] by either Wm. Edwards or Wm. Ellerby at London in 1805/06. No mono. 1.1" long, 0.75" wide, 0.38" thick, 8 troy dwts. $ 350.
1570-04. Antique George III Silver Vinaigrette of shaped rectangular form, the hinged cover, sides and base with plain surface, the gilt interior with a hinged applied filigree pierced grille; marked by Hart & Co. at Birmingham in 1806/07. No mono.  1.0" long, 0.75" wide, 0.25" thick, 6 troy dwts. Some minor dings on cover, seam split on base above applied thumbpiece. $ 250.

Antique George III Silver Vinaigrette of rectangular pillow form, the hinged cover with engraved foliate decoration, the base engraved with a narrow line and pricked double border, the gilt interior with a hinged applied filigree pierced grille; marked by Matthew Linwood at Birmingham in 1810/11. 1.12" long, 0.85" wide, 0.30" thick, 7 troy dwts. A mono has been erased from the cover resulting in the hallmarks outlines being visible from the outside. $ 200.
1567-66. Antique William IV Silver Snuffbox of rectangular form with thread moulded sides, the hinged cover and base with slightly beveled plain border enclosing the engraved engine-turned decoration, applied chased floral decorated thumbpiece on the cover and gilt interior; marked by Edward Smith at Birmingham in 1830/31 2.65" long, 1.65" wide, 0.55" thick, 2.25 troy oz. Script engraved "A. Haine" on cover. $ 350.

Antique Victorian Silver Vinaigrette of shaped rectangular form, the hinged cover, base and sides engraved with engine-turned decoration, applied engraved thumbpiece, the gilt interior with a hinged engraved foliate scroll decorated pierced grille; marked by Nathaniel Mills at Birmingham in 1842/43. 1.25" long, 0.90" wide, 0.30" thick, 9 troy dwts. Engraved in script "Emma" inside scroll edged shield reverse on the cover. Grille a little bent. $ 350.

Antique Victorian Silver Vinaigrette of rectangular form, the hinged cover and base decorated with engine-turned engraving, the sides with narrow horizontal ribbing, applied foliate engraved thumbpiece, the gilt interior with a hinged engraved floral decorated pierced grille; marked by Nathaniel Mills at Birmingham in 1843/44. 1.25" long, 0.85" wide, 0.38" thick, 8 troy dwts. Engraved Old English mono "M.B.G." inside a scroll edged shield on the cover. $ 350.

Antique Victorian Silver Vinaigrette of shaped oval form, the hinged cover and base engraved with foliate scroll decoration, the sides with engine-turned decoration, the interior with hinged foliate engraved pierced grille; marked by Francis Clark at Birmingham in 1845/46. Antique Victorian Silver Vinaigrette of shaped rectangular form, the hinged cover hand-engraved on an engine-turned background of a view of a villa on a lake, the sides and base engraved with foliate scroll decoration within scroll borders, the gilt interior with hinged foliate scroll pierced grille, cast and chased applied thumbpiece; marked by Edward Smith at Birmingham in 1847/48. 1.5" long, 1.25" wide, 0.35" thick, 14.5 troy dwts. Antique Victorian Traveling Toilet Set contained in its original leather-covered box; an upper tray fitted with four various sized rectangular hinged silvergilt boxes with the tops and sides engraved with engine-turned decoration, two rectangular glass flasks with similarly decorated silvergilt cylindrical collars and hinged caps, and a similarly decorated cylindrical silvergilt shaving brush housing; the lower tray fitted with seven tortoiseshell handled pieces including two razors, a nail file, an awl, a button hook, a very small corkscrew, and a knife (some pieces with gold trim), a two part small steel corkscrew, a gilt metal corkscrew, and an 18k gold earwax remover / tweezers; an interior bottom flap with spring to hold flat papers; the hinged cover housing a detachable easel mirror. The gold earwax remover / tweezers and silvergilt boxes and flasks marked by Thomas Diller at London in 1845/46, the steel blades of the razors and nail files marked by Edwards, the steel blades on the knife marked by Asprey, and the case lock marked by J. Bramah of 124 Picadilly. No monos. The case 3.38" high, 9.75" long, 5.62" wide, the leather chipped with a very large piece missing from the backside. Box sizes are 6.12" x 1.12" x 1.12", 3.25" x 1.12" x 2.0", 3.12" x 1.12" x 1.25" (2); Flasks are 4.38" x 1.12" x 1.0";  Shaving Brush housing (missing fittings) is 3.06" x 0.88" diameter; the fitted lower tray missing two scissors, several of the tortoiseshell handles missing small pieces. 1552-08. Elizabeth II Silver Souvenir Paperweight in the form or an ingot with hand-hammered textured surface on two opposing sides; marked by A. Gerald Benney at London in 1967. Engraved with a large Roman mono "PK" on one plain side and script inscription "with love from Harold + Diane Lever" on the other. The 5/8" square by 8" long ingot is a type used in hand-forging silverware and is from the workshop of one of the foremost modern British goldsmith & silversmith designers.
